Laundry Room Remodel - Cabinet Hardware

Adding cabinet hardware is the first current project of the laundry room remodel. Even though my posts have been back to back about the laundry room remodel, those updates are pretty old news... like August 2016 old news... I haven't touched the room since August partly because the cold weather tends to bring me down and in return I lack motivation. It's also been delayed because I said while the Kitchen remodel is going on (which I've still haven't gotten around to post about) that I would put the laundry room on hold. I started the kitchen remodel in February. The cabinet building in the kitchen has been put on hold until at least next weekend and since it's already way behind schedule, I've convinced Nate to help me install the hardware on the laundry room cabinets to hold me over until we can work on the kitchen cabinets again. So this is the first laundry room update of 2017.
Once I decided what style of hardware I wanted, I started shopping around. I decided to look for 7" handles in nickel to match the nickel/metallic accents on the washer and dryer. I wanted a modern look and something different than what I have planned in the kitchen. I checked out all the local home improvement stores and for the size I wanted, they were charging any where from $8-10 PER handle. I was not about to drop $60 on these things. Have I mentioned how much I love Amazon??? I found the exact ones I wanted for a fraction of the cost. I got a pack of 10 handles for $30, that's $3 a piece! The quality is so nice too! Boy I love good deals!

I got these puppies on my birthday and couldn't wait to install them once I had them in my hands. Two days after my birthday we started putting them up. Here was our tool and supply list:
- Handles (screws provided)
- Screwdriver
- Drill bits for pilot hole (Size depends on the screw size)
- Cabinet hardware template
- Wood Filler
- Sandpaper - 220-180 grit
- Pencil

We first started with the floor cabinet. This cabinet already had handles on it, the ones that came with it. We took those off, marked the new holes using the template and pencil (5" apart, 128mm), then began drilling pilot holes for the handles. We didn't seem to have any issues to begin with. Everything lined up well and all we had to do was add wood filler to fill the old handle holes, sand it down, etc. No problem!

Everything was going well until we moved on to the wall cabinets... I remember telling Nate, "don't worry this is going to be easiest project we've had to do so far." Once again I was wrong. I'm getting good at eating my words. Nate put up the handles on each of the big cabinets and I about died. They were tilted inwards... So began our downward spiral in attempts to fix the crooked handles.

Nate had a hard time getting the handles on straight because the drill bit had a tendency to want to shift when drilling. We ended up with a HUGE hole after we tried correcting the first, then second, then third mistake...So much for an easy task. So once again the wood filler came in handy. For the large hole we let that sit over night. Reapplied more wood filler in the morning and sanded it down.
If it wasn't for the wood filler, I probably would have had a nervous breakdown or murdered my fiance. I was still contemplating it until the next day. Ha... ha...

The next day after repeating the process of filling the giant hole, the door pretty much looked like new again and we reattempted to put the handles on straight. Luckily we got it right this time and had no issues putting them on the small middle cabinet. I don't normally think this would be difficult to do if we had shorter distance between the holes or if the hardware wasn't essentially just a line, making it obvious when it's just slightly or majorly off. I'm just glad we survived the installation process and nothing was destroyed beyond repair and no one was killed in the process. We finally have cabinet handles after 7 months! The major work is officially done! Trinity wanted to be a part of the progress shots once it was all said and done.

Here it is!!! These are my favorite and most recent shots. I wish we normally had natural lighting pouring into this room. Our garage door is open in these pictures. When the laundry room light is on it makes it hard to photograph the cabinet details. I'm so incredibly happy with how my laundry room looks! I just love it! Nate even said he liked the handles and that they look so much better with them.
