LockiT: The Sliding Glass Door Lock

Let me start by saying I love our glass sliding door. It allows so much light to fill the kitchen and living room and it has a great view of the pond. What I don't like? That it's a sliding glass door. They are notorious for being targets in home invasions. Sliding glass doors can be shook off their track and/or have the glass shattered for entry. While the second cannot be prevented, most people put PVC piping or some type of rod on the track so that the door cannot be yanked open. While this would probably deter most criminals, it can still be shook enough to knock that piece out. Also from my point of view, it's a lot more work for me, the homeowner to make sure that the rod is in place every time I leave the house. I especially didn't like having to do this because we'd tend to forget to pick it up and yank on the door handle and the rod we used was steel piping of sorts..so there was always a possibility of dropping it by mistake and shattering the whole door.

My handyman, of course, had already installed a LockiT on his sliding glass door that eliminated the need for a rod and it was a fail proof lock that wouldn't allow the door to be wiggled out of place. When I saw it, I knew I needed one! I picked up the LockiT from Home Depot for $30. It comes in white, black, and a combination of the two.

This is the lock:

With the LockiT in place above the normal door lock, it's a breeze to unlock and lock up the back door. I highly recommend this $30 lock!
