Day 1

I love our home, but one downside to our floor plan is the small master bathroom. Dare I say claustrophobic?? It's not just a small space, it's also not a very functional. The door leading in and out of the bathroom and the linen closet door make it nearly impossible to navigate the space. The doors have to practically be shut whenever you need to use the sink and counterspace, aka all the time.

Right now I don't have the time, energy, or money to start another total room remodel, but I can still make the space more usable for now, and for a reasonable price. My plan is to make the bathroom feel larger by removing the the linen closet door and making the shelving more practical and pretty! My goal is to transform this tiny space for under $100.

In the meantime what I do won't necessarily be permanent, some of it yes, but other pieces will improve once we start focusing solely on this room. This is just a simple and fun project while I'm in between projects in the kitchen! Here are some shots of the space. The door straight ahead goes to the linen closet and the door on the right is the main door to the bathroom.

As you can see these doors are ridiculous. I'm not sure who planned this but I want to slap them. I had to stand in the closet in order to take this picture!

Step 1: Update Shelving

You'd think I'd start by removing the closet door, but I decided not to do this until the inside of the closet is organized and finished. One way to simply and cheaply update the closet space is hiding the wire shelving. Down the road I will actually remove it and add solid wood shelving but for now I have a $5 fix!

With 5 sheets of $0.88 foam board I transformed my wire shelving. I found out about this cheap upgrade from another DIY blogger. The 20x30 sheets I picked up from Walmart worked well. I only had to make 2 cuts per board to get the correct sized pieces. The large piece sits on the shelf and the smaller strip I taped to the large piece with clear packaging tape.

The white foam board is very bright in comparison, that's because this room hasn't been painted at all. Eventually I will paint the room and the trim will be the bright white as seen in the laundry room and living room.

Items:

- (5) 20x30 Foam Boards - Walmart: $4.40

- Clear Packaging Tape - $0 (already owned)

Total so far:

$4.40

The next step will be purchasing baskets and miscellaneous storage containers for all of the small junk that usually just sits on the shelves and under the bathroom sink. This is the step I'm most excited for. I LOVE buying new home goodies!
